WHAT
IS LAGUNDI?
Lagundi,
a shrub from the Verbanaceae family traditionally used in
treatment of asthma, fever, headaches, inflammation, and
arthritis, is a licensed and registered medicinal plant
that is native to the Philippines. In 1996, Lagundi became
the first herbal medicine to be licensed and duly
registered by the Philippine Department of Health. After
extensive studies and clinical tests, the Philippine DOH
has certified Lagundi for use in cases of colds, flu,
pharyngitis, and asthma. Lagundi comes from a Philippine
variety of Vitex negundo, an herb listed in the Sanskrit
Materia Medica as having anti-inflammatory and expectorant
properties with applications including the treatment of
cough, fever, catarrh, and rheumatism. Lagundi contains
crysophlenol D, a smooth muscle relaxant with
anti-histamine properties. Although the Philippines are
rich in flora with over 10,000 varieties of plants, its
Department of Health has only approved a handful has
having certified medicinal qualities. And Lagundi was the
first!
ASTHMA
Filipinos
have the highest (per capita) rate of asthma in Asia. The
Philippine Department of Health has recommended that
Lagundi be used in mild to moderate cases of asthma.
Lagundi's anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine properties
has been effective in relieving asthma because histamine
can constrict the bronchial tubes and inflammation of mucus membranes can cause wheezing. Lagundi was also found to inhibit the
release of leukotrienes, which stimulate contraction
of bronchial smooth muscle and, like histamines,
contribute to constricted breathing and inflammation of
the lungs.
PUT
TO THE TEST
At
the time of its certification in the Philippines,
randomized double blind clinical trials pitted Lagundi against
two prescription medicines: Theophylline (a bronchodilator)
and Bromhexine (a cough suppressant). Lagundi's
bronchodilation and antitussive results were virtually
identical (±5%) in their ability to decrease symptoms in
an eight-hour period. Unlike prescription bronchodilators,
which often have side effects (like heart palpitations,
nervousness, and hyperactivity), Lagundi has no side
effects.
